  1. Basis Input/Output Services. Special chip set on the computer that is used to access the hardware. Mainly used during boot-up and shutdown, although operating systems such as DOS use it as the primary means of accessing the hardware. The term BIOS is used for both the chip itself and the routines contained within the chip.
